Wooden Tablets and Paper Folios - Some Reflections on the writing material along the northern rim of the Tarim Basin

24.01.2020 um 16:15 Uhr

Das Insitut für Indologie und Tibetologie lädt ein zu einem Vortrag von Frau Chao-jung Ching (Digital Archive Research Center / Research Center for World Buddhist Cultures, Ryukoku University) über "Wooden Tablets and Paper Folios".

Zeit und Ort: Freitag, 24. Januar 2020, 16 Uhr c.t., Ludwigstr. 31, 4. Stock, Raum 427

Writing culture in Kucha may trace its history back to the first century BC as implied by Chinese annals of the Han Dynasty. Nevertheless, given the relevant evidence so far gathered by scholars from this one of the most important intersections on the Silk Road, its seems that writing was only of very limited use until the boom of Buddhist literature. During this talk, I shall briefly reflect on the early history of Kucha from the Han (206BC – 220AD) to the Jin (266 – 420AD) period, with special discussion on the locally unearthed Kharoṣṭhī documents and recent results of microscopic observation on a few of them.
